I moved from Knoxville to Phoenix just two days after Christmas. Since graduating on December 13, I have been on a non-stop job hunt. From Washington D.C. to Los Angeles, I have continued to apply for jobs ranging from media sales to obit writer. But with countless lay-offs and more and more folding newspapers, the employers that have contacted me have said there’s just not enough money.

So Phoenix was a change of scenery. My body is adjusting to the huge change from 20 degrees and raining to 70 degrees under a cloudless sky. The cacti outside my door and the palm tree-lined streets make for a different pace and a new background. I began my search in Phoenix with The Arizona Republic the Associated Press. After receiving the same response about hiring freezes and cutbacks, I have started to pursue the niche community publications here, Desert Living, The Daily News-Sun and Phoenix Home and Garden among others.
Perhaps it’s not the most professional thing, but along with emailing my resume and calling, I have started to visit the offices myself. While it certainly makes an impression, I’m not sure it’s getting me ahead.
However, Ed2010 predicts that “hiring freezes will thaw by spring.”
How about Ed’s other nine predictions for the new year?
Print editors will have to do more online work (well if they haven’t realized that by now, they may be out of a job). Eliminated positions will be reinstated as budgets increase and circulation grows, and more media outlets will be headquartered outside of Manhattan. But the best news is that magazine readership is set to increase and will continue to grow until 2010.
The glossy print is still in style. It’s not all bad news.
Great work, very interesting content, keep up the good work kind regards mark
